Bring the definition along

When two reports disagree, I would check their definitions before comparing their arithmetic. A date may represent when an event happened, when it arrived, or when someone approved it. Each can be valid and still answer a different question.

I want important measures to travel with a plain-language explanation of what is included, what is excluded, and how timing works. A short example can make the boundary much easier to understand. Definitions are part of the product people use, especially when a number moves between teams with different responsibilities and expectations.
